True T-49 vs T-23 vs Turbo Air M3R47: Which Used Reach-In to Buy

Three reach-in workhorses compared on used price, failure modes, recall exposure, and what a compressor swap costs on each.

Three reach-ins dominate the used market: the two-door True T-49, the single-door True T-23, and the Turbo Air M3R47. All three can work. All three can die the same expensive way. The useful question is what you pay going in and how much room that leaves you when the compressor goes.

What each one actually costs used

The T-49 is the deepest market of the three. New street price runs $3,800–$4,600 for the current T-49-HC. Quality refurbished sits at $1,800–$2,400. Raw used listings spread $800–$2,000 depending on age and condition.

The T-23 is thinner. One new listing puts a 23 cu. ft. T-23 at $3,696. Used units start around $1,895 at dealer level — that is a single low-end anchor, not a logged range, so treat it as a floor to negotiate against rather than a market price.

The M3R47 has a new-price problem. One retailer listing shows about $5,011; a repair-cost source puts the same capacity class at $2,000–$3,000. That is a 2x disagreement, so we do not publish a new-unit number for this model — get it from a Turbo Air dealer directly. Used comps are cleaner: $2,500 and $2,160 for two-door M3R47-2-N units, $1,999 for a refurbished one, $3,420 for an M3R47-4 half-door stainless variant. Read the band as roughly $2,000–$3,400, and note that variant moves the price more than the condition label does.

Now run the number that matters. Your used price plus one compressor swap has to stay under refurbished money, or you bought the wrong unit. A $900 T-49 plus a $1,000 compressor lands at $1,900 — the bottom of the refurbished band, and you got there without a warranty. A $1,600 T-49 plus the same swap puts you at $2,600, past refurbished pricing entirely. Above roughly $1,400 on a T-49 with unknown service history, refurbished with a 30-day guarantee is the better buy.

The recall hits one of these three, and only one variant of it

CPSC Recall #24-219, issued May 2, 2024. True Manufacturing units built with Secop NLE11MN compressors, sold January 2018 through June 2020, can overheat and start a fire. Roughly 29,200 units. Fourteen fires reported, property damage, no injuries.

The named model list is glass-door equipment: GDM-45, GDM-47, GDM-47FC, GDM-47RL, GDM-49, GDM-49FC, GDM-49RL, GDM-69, GDM-69FC, GDM-72, GDM-72FC, GDIM-49NT, TSD-47, TSD-47G, and T-49G.

The plain solid-door T-49 is not on that list. Neither is the T-23. Neither is the T-72. If the unit in front of you has glass doors and a T-49G plate, pull the serial before you spend an hour on a test run. The repair is free from True at 855-203-0185 — the Secop ePTC starter gets replaced with a CSIR motor configuration. Documented retrofit, fine. No documentation, walk.

On Turbo Air, no CPSC recall for this brand's refrigeration surfaced in our checks. Read that as "none found," not "none exists." CPSC's own recall search cannot be queried reliably from outside, so an absent hit is weak evidence. Check the serial with the manufacturer if the unit is expensive enough to matter.

How each one fails

All three share one dominant failure: the compressor dies from chronic condenser fouling or a refrigerant leak. So the decisive question on every listing is the same: "When were the coils last cleaned?" A dated answer is worth real money. A shrug prices in a compressor.

Past that, each has its own tell. On the T-49, compressor winding failure and refrigerant leaks are the two headline complaints, and the risk curve steepens past 8–10 years. On the T-23, listen for short-cycling — the compressor starts and shuts down within seconds. That is a failing start relay, overload protector, capacitor, or a low charge, and the thermal cutoff killing power on overheat usually points at restricted airflow upstream.

The M3R47 has a distinct weak point: the M3 series uses smaller fan motors than Turbo Air's premium lines, they run 24/7, and they burn out earlier in hot kitchens. A dead evaporator fan ices the coil over from lost airflow. Turbo Air condensers also run tighter fin spacing than True's on several models, so they load up faster in the same kitchen.

On lifespan, be honest about what is known. The commercial reach-in class runs 8–15 years typical, up to 20 with real maintenance. No Turbo-Air-specific service-life figure exists in the published sources, so the class range is the only defensible number for the M3R47 too.

What the repair costs

On the True units: True-branded compressors list roughly $649–$1,139 depending on horsepower and voltage, and commercial refrigeration labor runs $500–$850. The common installed ballpark on a T-49 is about $1,000, with the general commercial band reaching $1,000–$2,500 once a tech finds sealed-system problems on teardown.

On the M3R47, compressor replacement is quoted at $700–$1,800 installed. Supporting work: condenser cleaning $150–$250, evaporator fan motor $200–$400, refrigerant leak repair $350–$1,000. No OEM compressor assembly price is published for this model, so the installed range is all you have until a dealer quotes you.

Parts and warranty

Both True models grade EXCELLENT on parts. Parts Town, True's OEM store, WebstaurantStore, and PartsFe all carry them, down to specific part numbers — compressor 236223 for the T-23, the 874525 compressor pull-out assembly for the T-49. The M3R47 grades GOOD: Parts Town, PartsFPS, and PartsFe stock gaskets, condenser coils, control boards, and doors.

New-unit warranty on the T-49-HC is 7 years parts, labor, and compressor. T-23-HC terms are not confirmed to match, so verify with True before you count on parity. Turbo Air is reported at 5 years limited parts and labor plus 7 years compressor parts, unconfirmed against the manufacturer's own warranty document. None of it transfers on a used sale.

Which one to buy

  • Under 5 years, recall-clear, coils clean, priced well under new: buy. All three pass. Choose on capacity and the space you have.
  • 5 to 9 years, unknown service history: inspect. Run it, listen for hard starts and short-cycling, check condenser fin condition and gasket seal, watch the pull-down. Negotiate to the used band or walk.
  • 10+ years at a premium price: walk. A 12-year-old T-49 at $1,500 is a $2,500 unit the moment the compressor goes.
  • Any T-49G, any build year, without retrofit paperwork: walk. Not a negotiation.

The T-49 is the default answer: deepest used market, deepest parts catalog, clearest repair pricing. The T-23 is the budget play if you find a young one, but the thin comp data means you are negotiating without much leverage. The M3R47 is the wildcard. Its self-cleaning condenser is real, but its components are less forgiving of neglect than True's. That makes the coil-cleaning question harder, not softer. Check the fins yourself. Do not take the seller's word.
