A refrigerated prep table may be the hardest-worked refrigerator in the building. It sits at waist height, runs 24 hours a day, gets opened every few minutes through service, and doubles as something line cooks lean on. The True TSSU-48-12 is the standard 48" sandwich and salad table: twelve 1/6-size pans, two doors. Used ones are everywhere. That does not make every cheap one a good buy.
Confirm the variant before you talk price
Do this first, because getting it wrong invalidates everything downstream. The TSSU-48-12 ships as TSSU-48-12 (legacy refrigerant), TSSU-48-12-HC (R290 hydrocarbon, current), TSSU-48-12-ADA, TSSU-48-12M-B and -12M-B-HC (Mega Top, deeper pan rail), TSSU-48-12D-2 and -D-4 (drawer versions), and TSSU-48-12-LP.
These are not interchangeable parts-wise. A quote for a rail gasket or a control on one suffix does not apply to another. Read the exact suffix off the data plate and use that full string when you price parts or ask a tech for a repair estimate.
What a used one costs
Two confirmed used comps on the TSSU-48-12: $2,160 for a self-contained hydrocarbon unit in stainless and aluminum, and $1,400 for a 115V unit listed as tested and in good condition. That $1,400–$2,160 band is the working reality.
Class-level context around it: a new 48" sandwich prep table runs over $3,000, refurbished equivalents around $1,800, and used prep tables generally trade 40–60% below new, meaning under $1,000 for small units and $2,500-plus for large premium ones.
Ignore auction-house reference prices. One TSSU-48-12 listing shows $4,999.99 as an "original retail price" typed in by the auctioneer. It is not a sale price and it is not a comp. It exists to make the bid look like a bargain.
Now look at how little room that leaves you. New is just over $3,000 and used runs $1,400–$2,160, so the gap between what you pay and what one serious repair costs is thin. On prep tables, documented service history is worth more than a low asking price.
How prep tables fail
Short-cycling is the recurring TSSU complaint: the compressor starts, runs briefly, shuts off, repeats. Two causes dominate. Either a failing start relay or a repeatedly tripping overload protector, or a temperature controller that has lost its range and can no longer hold a setpoint. The mirror-image controller failure is stuck-closed contacts, which run the compressor continuously instead. Both need the control replaced.
Evaporator frost and ice buildup is the second pattern, and it restricts airflow until the table stops holding temperature. If a tech reports low-side pressure dropping below about 10 psi overnight, that indicates extended compressor run time against a light load, or an airflow and defrost fault. It does not indicate a healthy machine working hard.
Condenser dirt and blockage is the preventable one, and the reason to ask for maintenance records. A prep table pushed against a wall on a hot line packs its coil with lint fast.
Rail and pan-well wear is the prep-table-specific item. Condensation cycles around the pan rail work on the gaskets and seals in that area. There is no published failure-rate data on this, so treat it as an inspection point rather than a spec: peeling or cracked rail gaskets and condensation staining tell you the table ran hard between shifts without ever drying out.
What a repair costs, and what nobody publishes
Be direct about the gap here. There is no published out-of-warranty compressor or condensing-unit replacement price for the TSSU-48-12. The $1,000 installed ballpark that circulates for a True T-49 is a different product line with different sealed-system sizing, and borrowing it will mislead your budget in either direction.
So do this instead. Call a local commercial refrigeration shop with the exact suffix off the data plate and get a real number before you make an offer. If you hear short-cycling or hard starts at inspection, get that quote in writing. Short-cycling can be an inexpensive relay swap or a full compressor job, and the difference between those two is a diagnosis, not a guess.
What is documented is the warranty benefit on new units: True replaces an in-warranty condensing unit as one pre-assembled factory assembly, compressor and condenser and start components and fan motor together, at no additional cost. That is genuinely good coverage on the TSSU line, and it is precisely the thing that does not come with a used table.
Parts supply is not a concern. Recall check: not named, still worth thirty seconds
The 2024 CPSC recall of True refrigerators with Secop NLE11MN compressors (CPSC #24-219) names glass-door models: GDM-45, GDM-47, GDM-49, GDM-69, GDM-72, T-49G and others. The TSSU-48-12 is not on that list.
One caution before you file that away. The recall is defined by compressor model, not by product line. Nobody has published confirmation of whether any TSSU-48-12 ever shipped with a Secop NLE11MN. Read the compressor tag on any unit built between January 2018 and June 2020 regardless of what the model plate says. It costs you half a minute.
Refrigerant era: check who can service it
The plain TSSU-48-12 runs legacy refrigerant; the TSSU-48-12-HC runs R290 hydrocarbon. R290 service needs a shop equipped for hydrocarbon work, and in some regions that is a shorter list with longer waits. Read the refrigerant off the data plate and confirm with one local shop that they service it before you commit.
Expected life
Commercial prep tables run about 10 years typical, 10–15 with regular servicing, up to 20 with strong maintenance. No TSSU-48-12-specific figure is published, and current TSSU-48-12-HC warranty terms are not confirmed, so do not assume they match the 7-year compressor coverage on the T-49 line. It never transfers used anyway.
Use 10 years as the line where you stop assuming and start requiring documentation.
The inspection sequence
- Read the full suffix off the data plate, plus the refrigerant and compressor tag.
- Run it at load for 20 minutes. Listen for hard starts and for short-cycling: click on, ten seconds, click off, repeat.
- Feel the discharge line. Hot and steady, not cycling.
- Look at the condenser fins behind the shroud. Heavy dust means it was never professionally cleaned; budget $150–$250 for a first service call.
- Check the pan-rail gaskets and seals for peeling, cracks, and condensation staining in the well.
- Ask when a tech last serviced the condenser. A dated answer is leverage. A blank stare is a coil cleaning you are about to pay for.
Buy, inspect, or walk
- Under 5 years, compressor tag clear, coils and rail gaskets clean, priced at or below $1,800: buy. Life left, price inside the confirmed used band.
- 5 to 9 years, unknown service history: inspect, then get a repair quote on anything you hear before you negotiate toward the $1,400 end.
- 10+ years above $1,500: walk. You are paying mid-band money for the tail of the service life.
- Short-cycling at inspection: do not assume it is just a relay. No quote, no offer.
- Fouled condenser plus cracked rail gaskets plus staining in the well: that is a neglected table. Price the service in or walk.
