The most common searches that reach this site are not "should I buy this machine." They are "827a parts," "s36d parts," "am15 parts": someone standing in front of a broken machine trying to find the right component. We have spent a lot of hours verifying parts fitment for our own price tables, and the process taught us exactly where buyers go wrong. Here is the short version.
Rule 1: the model's catalog page outranks the part's description
Big parts retailers structure their sites two ways: a catalog page per machine model (every part they say fits it), and a product page per part. Here is the trap we hit repeatedly while building our price tables: a part's product page usually shows only a truncated "Popular Models" list, not the full fitment list. We have watched a genuine True GDM-49 part display a Popular Models line naming three completely different True machines, while the GDM-49's own catalog page listed the part plainly.
So invert the search: start from the machine's catalog page (retailer search: brand + model + "parts"), find the part there, and only then look at the product page for price. If you start from a part number and the Popular Models blurb does not name your machine, that proves nothing either way, check the model catalog before concluding anything.
Rule 2: the data plate beats the front badge
Commercial equipment families reuse names across genuinely different machines. A "T-49" exists in normal-depth, freezer, glass-door, and hydrocarbon-refrigerant variants with different gaskets, controls, and compressors. The full model string and serial on the unit's data plate (usually inside the cabinet or behind the kick plate) is the identity that matters. Photograph it before ordering anything.
Rule 3: price the part against the machine before ordering it
This is what our parts tables exist for. Real observed prices from our verified records: a Berkel 827A ribbed belt is about $98, but a Vulcan VC4ED blower motor runs over $2,100, a CMA-180 pump assembly about $1,267, and a Rational SCC 61 control board over $3,300. Meanwhile whole working used units of some machines sell in the same range as one major part. When the part costs a third of a replacement machine, you are not making a parts decision anymore, you are making a repair-or-replace decision, and our repair-or-replace math applies.
Rule 4: wear parts and control parts fail differently
Across every brand we track, the pattern holds: gaskets, belts, fan motors, and thermostats are consumables, expect to replace them and stock the cheap ones. Control boards, compressors, and pumps are the machine's fate: when those fail on an old unit, check the machine's record on this site before spending, because a documented pattern failure means the same part may fail again for the same underlying reason.

- Photograph the data plate: full model string plus serial.
- Find the machine's own parts catalog page at a real parts retailer.
- Locate the part there first; treat product-page "Popular Models" blurbs as marketing, not fitment truth.
- Compare the part price to the machine's used value in our records.
- If it is a control board, compressor, or pump on an aging unit, read the model's failure record before ordering.
