A used refrigerator is a bargain right up until the compressor quits. Then the whole calculation changes, usually on a Saturday, usually with product in it. On a common two-door reach-in like the True T-49, budget about $1,000 installed. The general commercial band runs $1,000–$2,500 once a tech opens the sealed system and finds more than a compressor.
Carry that number into every listing you look at, because it is the number that decides whether a $1,200 used unit is a bargain or a $2,500 lesson. Here is what you are actually paying for.
Parts vs labor: how the number splits
True-branded compressors list roughly $649–$1,139 depending on horsepower and voltage. Commercial refrigeration labor runs $500–$850. A larger commercial compressor part on its own tops out around $700 in the general cost guides, which is why the True-branded range sits above generic pricing. You are paying for OEM fit.
One caution on published part prices. A True compressor unit listed at $1,467.47 circulates as a reference figure, and it looks authoritative because it has cents on the end. It is part 934656 for a different True model and has never been confirmed as the correct fit for a GDM-49 or a T-49. Do not budget from it. Pull the part number off your own data plate and price that.
Rebuilt and remanufactured compressors exist and shops do offer them. Published price and warranty terms for reman commercial units are not something we have sourced, so ask your tech for the reman price and the reman warranty in writing before you assume it saves you anything. Labor does not move either way. The tech charges the same to pull and set a compressor no matter where it came from.
When warranty pays, and when you do
Current-generation True units are the best coverage in the class. The T-49-HC (R290 hydrocarbon) carries 7 years on parts, labor, and compressor from new.
Glass-door merchandisers are covered differently. A standard GDM-49 runs 3 years parts and labor plus 2 additional years on the compressor. The current HC version runs 3 years parts and labor plus 7 years on the compressor.
None of that helps you on a used unit. Warranty does not transfer. A compressor that dies in year 8 on a machine you bought in year 5 is entirely your cost, and the 7-year coverage that made the model look bulletproof belongs to whoever bought it new.
Worth knowing if you are weighing new against used: on True's TSSU prep-table line, an in-warranty compressor failure is handled by replacing the whole condensing unit. Compressor, condenser, start components, and fan motor arrive as one pre-assembled factory assembly at no additional charge. That is unusually good coverage, it is specific to that line, and it is exactly the thing you give up by buying used.
What kills compressors early
Condenser coil fouling is the preventable one, and it is the dominant cause. A compressor working against a dirty coil runs hot, runs long, and dies years ahead of schedule. Which means documented cleaning on a quarterly or semi-annual cycle is the single strongest signal that a used unit has life left in it.
Refrigerant leaks are second. Low charge means the compressor runs harder for longer to hold temperature, and it ages fast. The tell is oil residue on the compressor block. Refrigerant carries oil, so wherever oil is pooling, refrigerant has been leaving. A recharge without finding and repairing the breach is theater. It will be low again in weeks and the compressor will be worse for it.
So ask every seller one question: "When were the coils last cleaned?" A dated answer with a service company attached is worth hundreds of dollars in negotiating position. "It was running fine when we unplugged it" is not an answer.
Sourcing the part and getting quotes
Parts depth is not the problem on the True lines. Parts Town, True's own OEM store, WebstaurantStore, and PartsFe all carry T-49 and GDM-49 components, including compressor assemblies. You can buy the part yourself and hand it to an independent shop, which sometimes beats the all-in quote. Sometimes it does not. Some shops charge a flat service rate regardless, and some will not warranty labor on a part they did not supply. Ask before you order anything.
Get three quotes on any unit over 10 years old. Older sealed systems tend to reveal a second problem once the compressor is out, and you want to know which shop tells you that up front instead of on the invoice.
The break-even against refurbished
This is the calculation that should drive the decision, because sticker price alone is the wrong number to shop on.
Quality refurbished T-49-class units run $1,800–$2,400, typically with a short dealer warranty. Raw used T-49s run $800–$2,000. So run it: a $1,200 used unit that needs a compressor in year two lands you at $2,200–$2,400. That is refurbished money, with no warranty, on an older machine.
Glass-door units run the same trap at a higher price point. Verified used GDM-49 listings spread $1,250–$2,539, tracking model year closely: 2009–2010 units near $1,250–$1,300, 2018–2021 units at $2,200–$2,540. Add a $1,000–$2,000 compressor to a $2,400 unit and you are at $3,400–$4,400 against a dealer's stated new-unit anchor of $4,750. At that point you bought a used machine for near-new money.
The rule is simple. On any used reach-in, your purchase price plus one compressor event has to stay below the refurbished band. If it does not, buy refurbished.
The two-minute test before you pay
Have the seller run the unit while you are standing there. Do not accept a video from last week.
Listen for a click from the compressor block. Repair-forum consensus puts an audible click at roughly an 80% chance the compressor is already dead or dying. That is a walk, not a negotiation.
Listen for hard starts and short-cycling. A labored spin-up, or a compressor that runs ten seconds and shuts off over and over, is a distressed start circuit at best and a distressed compressor at worst.
Feel the discharge line coming off the compressor. It should be hot and steady. If it cycles hot and cold, the compressor is fighting something.
Look for oil on the compressor block and pull the panel on the condenser to see the fin condition yourself.
Four checks, two minutes, no tools. The compressor cost is fixed at $1,000–$2,500 whether you find it now or in month three. The only variable is whether you paid for it knowingly.
