# Scotsman NS0922: Used-Buy Risk, Repairs & What to Check | KitchenRisk

> Used Scotsman NS0922 buying guide, bin-level photo-eye sensor set risk, repair costs and what to inspect.

**Verdict:** inspect

Popular nugget-ice head with active OEM parts support (water level sensor ~$37, bin-level photo-eye sensor set ~$255); Scotsman's own service manual requires the photo-eyes and water probes to be manually cleaned twice a year and flags scale/blockage on either as a direct cause of overfill, no-ice, or bin-code faults, so confirm the ice level shuts off properly and the reservoir probes are clean before buying used.

**Documented failure risks:**
- Bin-level photo-eye sensor set: OEM bin level control/sensor set (Scotsman A37708-021, set of 2) lists at $254.72 on Parts Town. Per Scotsman's own service manual, "The control that senses bin full and empty is a photo-electric eye, therefore it must be kept clean so it can 'see'. At least twice a year, remove the ice level sensors from the base of the ice chute, and wipe the inside clean." The manual's diagnostic table also lists a blocked or scaled photo-eye in the chute as a cause of the unit overfilling or shutting down on a bin-code fault.
- Water level sensor: OEM water level sensor (Scotsman A40666-001, two-probe conductivity type) lists at $36.71 on Parts Town. Scotsman's service manual states: "The ice machine senses water by probe located in the water reservoir. At least twice a year, the probes should be wiped clean of mineral build-up," and separately describes it as a "Two probe conductivity sensor. When water touches it the Water Present light will be ON." Mineral scale on the probes is the documented failure mode to check for during inspection.
